It can be a bit overwhelming to begin a project such as a complete closet remodel. It's a good idea to research a business or closet company before committing to a project so that you know what to expect and what is involved.
We have provided a list of sample questions to ask when calling a full service custom closet storage company, including explanations.
Sample answers have been provided for typical comparisons, but it is always good to ask a company directly about their individual products and policies.
How long does the entire process take?
Most custom closet storage systems from appointment to installation usually takes 3-8 weeks.
What materials do you use for your closet storage systems?
Most companies use some sort of pressed wood product for the closet systems. Some may also offer solid wood as an upgrade but not all. Melamine or MDF are usually industry standards.
Does your company charge for a design consultation?
Most companies will provide a free, no-obligation consultation with a custom closet designer in your home or their showroom.
If my home is not built yet, can you work from blue prints?
This is a good question to ask. Some companies may work from blue prints, but it is always good to wait until the dry wall is up for accurate measurements of the closet area.
How long does the actual custom closet installation take?
Most custom closet storage systems are installed in one or two days.
Do you provide tear-out of my old closet system?
Most full service closet companies will tear-out your old shelving and poles prior to installation, usually the same day.
Do you provide painting services as well?
This is not a typical service that closet companies provide, but it doesn’t hurt to ask.
What is the average cost of a custom closet system provided by your company?
This can range from $1,000 and upward of $20,000 or more. Give a brief description of what you are looking for and the size of your closet for a more accurate ball park figure.
How long has your company been in business?
Some companies have been around for decades, others have only been around a few years; this is not really a reflection on the designs, closet storage systems or craftsmanship, but it is good information to have none the less. Companies that stick around are there to cover their warranties, have referrals and a nice portfolio of closet storage systems installed in the past.
What differentiates you from other custom closet companies?
This question provides a great opportunity to find out more about the company and what sets them apart from competitors.
Where are your systems manufactured?
Some companies take their measurements and designs and order the materials and components of the closet storage systems from a parent company or manufacturer, while other companies manufacture everything locally. The difference is that companies who manufacture locally have the ability to quickly make repairs, additions and so forth with out having to go through a middle man. They should have materials in stock and may be able to assist you in a timelier manner.
Do you use your own employees to install or subcontract the work out?
It is always a good thing when a closet company installs the work themselves and employs their own installers. You can be assured that the workers are familiar with the product, are good at what they do and that the labor is warranted by the same company through which you purchased the custom closet storage systems.
